Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Brandon Phillips hit only 18 home runs last season. In the three prior seasons he had at least 20 each season. The two home run drop off looks worse than it is because 20 or 30 or 40 home runs is such a magical number, but if he had dropped from 25 to 23 you probably wouldn't think anything of it. Phillips' fly ball rate has stayed between 33.3% and 34.9% over the last five seasons, so the drop off is purely a result of not getting enough luck in home run to fly ball rate. He still should be on target to get about 20 home runs this season.
Skeptics Say: There was plenty of reason for excitement following Phillips' best season in 2007 when he stole 30 bases and hit 30 home runs. You could have made the case for him in 2008 that he should be the first second baseman taken off the board. Now it looks like the 30 home runs was just a result of a career best 15.9% home run to fly ball rate, and who knows where the 32 steals came from. Phillips was caught stealing a career worst 12 times last season and only successful 16 times. Saying that his days as a base stealer are over at age 30 would be jumping the gun, but it's hard to expect better going forward.
Projection: Look at the agreement in what they're saying! Cockcroft and I haven't had the same opinion on anyone up until now. That just goes to show how reliable Phillips is that all projections have him going right in the same neighborhood.
