Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Key Stats: Where Justin Morneau is being ranked among the major publications out there does not do justice to the kind of season he had last year. He is the biggest loophole in the early part of the draft. Before he was lost for the season to a concussion on July 7th, Morneau was hitting .345 with a 1.055 OPS. He was ranked 14th in ESPN leagues and 13th in Yahoo leagues at the end of June. Do those facts look like a player that should be taken after the 50th overall selection? Were Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers not a Super Bowl contender because they were a Wild Card team? Even with all the depth at first base, if Morneau had stayed healthy he certainly would be a fringe first round pick this season.
Skeptics Say: Three things. First, his concussion problems. Last year was not the first time he's had head issues. Morneau's 2005 season was destroyed because of a head injury. Considering that the attention given for head injuries to athletes is more scrutinized today than it ever has been, the Twins and Morneau are going to walk a very cautious path if he has a headache. Although he is progressing, Morneau still hasn't been cleared to play this spring.
Second, if he had stayed healthy all of last season, it would have been interesting to see how much he could sustain his stat line. In four of the last five seasons, Morneau's average and OPS has dipped considerably in the second half.
Third, the Twins move from the Metrodome benefits their pitchers, not their hitters. Of the Twins regulars the past two seasons, only Delmon Young had better numbers at Target Field than he did at the Metrodome. And his case was likely more a result of his development than the new park. Morneau hit for the same OPS at both parks, but if the sample size had been larger, that probably would not be the case.
Projection: Morneau might be the kind of player you draft at a discount, and sell at a premium some time in late June or early July based on his injury history and second half performances.
