Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
I can’t recall a fantasy draft where I selected a closer with a top ten preseason rank. There are always numerous closers available in the middle-to-late rounds who end up providing top ten stats (e.g. Billy Wagner and Rafael Soriano last year). I would rather spend two mid-round picks on those type of high-risk, high-reward players knowing there is high probability that one of them does terribly than spend a top 100 pick on an established closer.
One such high-risk, high-reward player is Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Craig Kimbrel. In 20.2 innings last year Kimbrel dominated major league hitters striking out 40 batters and allowing only 1 earned run. Strikeouts and low eras are nothing new for Kimbrel, as his K/9 ratio for his minor league career was over 13 while his ERA was under two.
Many people believe that Kimbrel will be the closer next year largely based on the fact that he was the setup man for the Braves towards the end of last season and got the save opportunity when an injured Billy Wagner couldn’t pitcher in game 4 of the NLDS. He certainly has closer stuff with a mid-high 90s “rising” fastball and a tight, late-breaking slider. However, control problems and stiff competition mean that Kimbrel is certainly not a lock for the job.
Will Craig Kimbrel actually win and hold onto the Braves’ 2011 closer role? Kimbrel’s biggest weakness is that he has below-average control (and that’s putting it kindly). In 76.1 innings between AAA and the majors last year, Kimbrel walked 51 batters. Control problems have brought down more than a few potential star closers in the past.
Furthermore, young left-hander Jonny Venters had and all-star type of year in 2010 and Braves’ manager Fredi Gonzalez said Venters could share closing duties with Kimbrel next season. Even if Kimbrel does win the closer’s job outright next year, he’ll have short leash with the talented Venters pitching behind him.
In addition, young relievers who show initial major league success are far from sure things. Joba Chamberlin and Jonathan Broxton are just two of the many young relievers who have struggled recently after having initial major league success.
Projection: Kimbrel’s stuff is just too good for him not to win the closer’s role.
4 wins, 38 saves, 2.55 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 105 K in 75 innings.

KFFL Says:
Narrow it down to Craig Kimbrel and Jonny Venters for saves. Both have absurd dominance. Both have control issues. Venters showed much better ground-ball inducement in 2010, but Kimbrel has a history of dirt-denting, as well, despite not showing it in the majors.
