Jhoulys Chacin went from a decent prospect in 2009 to turn in one of the more impressive rookie campaigns last year with a 3.28 ERA over 137.1 innings (173 innings overall) for the Rockies. However, the one stat that should make fantasy owners take notice was his 9.04 K/9 rate that would have qualified for 11th in MLB if he pitched enough MLB innings (better than fantasy stalwarts Justin Verlander (8.79), Ubaldo Jimenez (8.69), Felix Hernandez (8.36) and Adam Wainwright (8.32).
While the rule to never take a Rockies pitcher has ended, Coors Field clearly still favored the hitter by yielding the highest park factor of any major league park (1.364 compared to Yankees Stadium at 1.177) which showed in Chacin’s 3.98 Home ERA. Add that to Chacin’s high walk rate at 4.0 BB/9 which qualified for 397th out of all pitchers in 2010 and you have a pitcher that will pitching with a lot of men on base in the worst pitching environment in baseball.
Projection: Chacin represents a great K-upside play later in your fantasy baseball draft. If he can improve his control and cut down on his walks, he could be a huge breakout SP in 2011.
