Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Key Stats: Jon Lester was the only pitcher in baseball to finish in the top four in both wins and overall strikeouts last season. He was in the top twelve in both of those categories in 2009. Safe to say that based on the upgrades the Red Sox made in the offseason to both the lineup and the bullpen that Lester should have no trouble being near the top again in wins in 2011. His K/9 inning has been over 9.7 for two straight seasons, so it's safe to say that trend should continue as well.
Skeptics Say: I was listening to an interview that Terry Francona gave when pitchers and catchers first reported to camp, and one of the thing he mentioned is that Lester hasn't peaked yet. He cited the fact that Lester sometimes lets one bad call wear him down mentally and that he has never came out of the gates pitching well. It's hard to measure the former comment, but the latter is definitely true.
During his three full seasons, Lester has a 4.76 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP in March and April. If you take March and April out of the equation Lester has a 3.03 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in that time. So if you are going to draft him you might want to prepare for a rocky takeoff.
Projection: Lester will put together a solid April and win the 2011 Cy Young Award.
20 wins 3.10 ERA 1.19 WHIP 231 K in 211 innings
