Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Jonathan Papelbon is a big Jonathan Papelbon fan. He goes so far as to call himself cinco ocho. Given that he is one of the more self-absorbed players in the game and someone who has openly discussed his reasons for not signing a long term contract for years, the biggest stat for Papelbon is that he has one year left under contract with the Red Sox before he becomes a free agent in 2012.
Well the skeptics are out. I'm certainly one of them. From 2006 through 2008, Papelbon was a top 50 fantasy play. In 2009, he began to slip ranking 96th before this past season falling further to 130th. Beyond his 8 blown saves (no closer had more), there are other worries. His BB/9 has almost quadrupled since 2008 while his strikeouts have gone down by almost 3 per 9 innings. Given that both the strikeout and walk numbers are a two year trend, it is not something we should simply write off as "an off year."
Projection: There were only four closers ranked in Yahoo's top 100 in both 2009 and 2010. This position is so volatile and a big name like Papelbon is not immune.
37 SV 2 wins 73 K 3.66 ERA 1.27 WHIP in 68 innings
