Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
One of the most important stats for Chris Carpenter last year was his 235 innings pitched last year. When Carpenter pitches, he pitches well. With a healthy 2010 season, he had his usually great peripherals sporting a 3.22 ERA and 1.18 WHIP and an increase in K rate from last year to 6.9 K/9. 235 innings were the 2nd most he's pitched in his career.
In taking a look at his stats last year, he saw an overall increase in most of his stats including an increase of almost a point in ERA and .17 in WHIP. This was due to two main factors. First, Carpenter's staple is the groundball and last year he saw an decrease in his overall GB % from 55% (his career high) to 51.1% resulting in a GB / FB of 1.58, his lowest from his rookie season.
The second concerning stat was his HR / FB % of 9.3%. While it was illogical to expect the same stellar 4.9% from 2009, the regression to career norms is concerning coming into his Age 36 season.
Projection: Carpenter should be a good #2 and really good #3 for fantasy rotations in 2011. Without injury, we should see more of the same from the veteran pitcher. Although I expect a small drop of innings this year.
15 wins 3.20 ERA 1.17 WHIP 165 K's
