Say what you will about Petco, but Mat Latos had a 1.08 WHIP at home and on the road last season. Against lefties he had a 1.04 WHIP and versus righties he had a 1.13 WHIP against. He proved that he could pitch regardless of the situation.
Latos was certainly on the radar late in drafts in mixed leagues last year, but nobody thought he would crack the top 50 in Yahoo for four straight months (May through August). Only he and Adam Wainwright were able to do this among starting pitchers last season.
Overall the 3.58 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in the second half last season were more in line with what the original expectations for this guy were last year. Perhaps those are the numbers you use to draft him next year. Certainly everyone in What They're Saying isn't expecting him to be 31st again.
Latos will see an increase in his overall ERA and WHIP next year, but both numbers will be under his second half totals.
Projection: 13 wins 3.20 ERA 1.19 WHIP 200 K in 194 innings

Latos has a chance to be a really special pitcher, because he has ace quality stuff along with pitching in an extreme pitcher's park (Petco Park). His 2010 season (14-10 2.92 ERA 1.083 WHIP over 184.2 innings) drew some Cy Young votes. He is only 23 years old heading into next season, so a chance of injury is still there. However, he has a chance to be one of the top 5-10 pitchers in baseball maybe as soon as this season. Latos just dominated hitters in 2010 (9.21 k/9ip), and had excellent control as well (3.78k/bb ratio). This is a truly special pitcher, and he is a cornerstone of any fantasy staff. If you can get Latos for under $32 at an auction then count your blessings.
