Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Pedro Alvarez sported just a .788 OPS in his 96 games with the Pirates last season. It was a small sample size, but compared to what he had done coming up in the organization (.908 OPS in 820 plate appearances) it would not have been much to ask for his OPS to have been above .800. It wasn't, but this year it should be. Alvarez was just getting his feet wet last year and will have a better idea of what pitchers are trying to do to him and how to counter their strategy. He also will have a full sample size of at-bats to get the numbers straightened out with.
Alvarez really needs to cut down on his strikeouts. Bill James believes Alvarez will lower his strikeout rate by 5.5%, but the rate would still be high even in that case. Alvarez will need to particularly demonstrate that he can handle left handed pitching. He struck out 39.5% of the time against lefties and had just a .302 OBP.
Projection: At the pace he hit home runs last year, Alvarez would finish with 27 home runs in a 162 game season. Assuming the strikeouts do come down a little, that sounds about right for 2011.

Suite 101 Fantasy Baseball Says:
Drafted in the first round (second overall) in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft, Alvarez was considered by many scouts to be one of the best hitting prospects in baseball entering last season. Alvarez, a hitting machine in college at Vanderbilt University, destroyed minor league pitching before being called up to the Majors in late June. He struggled at time in 2010, but but showed signs of his immense power and skill in the second half, batting .270 with 13 home runs and 53 RBI in only 71 games. When this guy figures out left-handed pitching (he hit .228 against them last year), he's going to be scary. Don't hesitate to reach for him in the early rounds, especially if you're in a keepers league.
