The overall ranking for Tommy Hanson moved up just 4 spots from where he was as a rookie after making just 21 starts to last year when he made 34 starts. And while his ERA, WHIP, and K/9 were all down, they were not drastically down. The reason for Hanson's not rising in the rankings really came down to wins. He had just 10 wins. In 11 second half quality starts, Hanson got a winning decision in just two of those games. His luck was awful, but he was very good with the things he could control.
His throwing motion looks like an injury waiting to happen - there's way too much pressure on his arm and not enough on his body. Durability will be a huge question as the Braves likely take the kid gloves off in his third season. Hanson threw more than 105 pitches in just nine of his starts last year.
Another concern with Hanson is that he did not strikeout more than 6 in his final 13 starts last year. He was projected as a power pitcher and seems to possess the stuff to be one, but with a 7.68 K/9, but that number isn't too far above the NL average from last year of 7.39.
Projection: If Hanson is healthy, he could be a top fifty player. He has the stuff to be a top ten strikeouts guy and could become that this season. Then again, if he isn't healthy all bets are off.
