Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
For the second season in a row, Billy Butler was ranked in the top 100 overall in Yahoo. He had only 9 more strikeouts than he did walks last season which is a huge improvement on the three seasons prior when he close to a 2:1 strikeout to walk rate each season. He's only going to be 25, so clearly his plate discipline is developing before our eyes.
With two straight top 100 rankings and not yet in the prime of his career, it would seem to make sense to put him higher than 99th. As you will read at the bottom of last year's article, much of why I ranked him higher last year was because I expected his doubles to turn to home runs. That did not happen. Butler still hit a ton of doubles in 2010, but actually had less home runs than he did in 2009. Perhaps the lack of power was a consequence of better plate discipline, but I would assume that by swinging at less bad pitches he would be hitting better pitches further. Overall his numbers look very weak compared to other first baseman: 15 home runs, 77 runs, 78 RBI, and 0 steals.
Projection: I still think there's hope that the doubles become home runs, but I'm going to have to see it rather try to anticipate it this year.
