Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
B.J. Upton is coming off of his third season in four years of being ranked in the top 100 by Yahoo for the season. Last year he was ranked 92. What helped him bounce back from his worst fantasy season in 2009 was his home run total which increased from 11 to 18 thanks to a more normal home run to fly ball rate of 11% compared to 6.8% the season before. Given that Upton's career HR:FB rate is 10.5%, the amount of balls that cleared the fence in 2009 is most likely an outlier.
With the increase in power last year came an increase in strikeouts. Upton was fanning more than 30% of the time, the most he's struck out since his first full big league season. Upton was the 8th easiest hitter in baseball to strikeout overall, and only his brother (7th on the list) had less home runs among the top ten. Unless a hitter is killing the ball on contact, high strikeout rates lead to low averages and Upton owners have to swallow that pill with B.J. Against power pitchers, Upton has appeared over-matched of late.
Projection: After being ranked 54th in 2007, many thought Upton was on the path to being a perennial first round pick. Things haven't worked out for him the past couple seasons between injuries, lack of effort, and going through spurts without confidence. This season will be critical in his development.

Razzball Says:
Upton’s one of the few players I could envision being a top five overall fantasy contributor. Never underestimate someone who can hit 20 homers and steal 40 bases. 2011 Projections: 95/17/75/.250/40
