Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Ted Lilly is the best pitcher that won't cost a lot to help a team in WHIP. Lilly was 7th in all of baseball in WHIP last season. He was fifth the season before. Tim Lincecum, Adam Wainwright, Chris Carpenter, Roy Halladay, Felix Hernandez, Roy Oswalt, Javier Vazquez, Cliff Lee, and Jered Weaver finished in front of him in those seasons. Three of those guys went on to win Cy Young Award (Lincecum, King Felix, and Halladay), and all of them with the exception of Vaquez (and who knows if he is an asset or a liability for WHIP at this point) will be taken at least four rounds ahead of Lilly in 2011. Given that only Halladay has had a better WHIP each of the last two seasons, getting Lilly at this point in the draft is a steal if he holds up.
It has been said for a few seasons now, but Lilly is getting old. He will be 35 next season and assuming he gets a multi-year deal this offseason there will be one less incentive for him to work towards.
Projection: For the ninth consecutive season, Lilly will finish with double digits in the wins column.
16 wins 3.52 ERA 1.14 WHIP 173 K in 198 innings
