Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Joe Nathan was a rock from 2004 to 2009 in the Twins bullpen. He averaged 41 saves per season, a 1.87 ERA, and over 11 strikeouts per 9 innings. Averaged. Those numbers would hang with the numbers of Billy Wagner last season alone and Wagner finished the year as the top closer in all of fantasy land.
As of last November, Nathan claims he has not had any setbacks in his recovery from Tommy John Surgery. That does not mean he is going to be the same player he was in those first six brilliant seasons with the Twins. For one thing, as mentioned in the post on Rafael Soriano the other day, he may be like B.J. Ryan and never regain his stuff. And while some of the most dominant pitchers on the mound last season have had Tommy John Surgery (Josh Johnson, Wagner, Chris Carpenter, and others), this season could also just be a recovery year similar to what Francisco Liriano went through in 2009 when he went 5-13 with a 5.80 ERA. Tommy John Surgery or not, Nathan is 36 years old. Other things can go wrong too at this point in a career.
Projection: Of course there's a lot of risk in this pick, but given that Nathan was top 60 in 4 straight seasons before surgery there's too much reward to pass up at this point.
4 wins 37 saves 2.10 ERA 1.08 WHIP 77 K in 69 innings
